Transforming a barn into a sustainable haven: a comprehensive off-grid solution

Off-grid barn conversion with solar PV & battery storage

Background

Helios Solar were asked to help transform a rural property into an off-grid and carbon-reducing haven. The client wanted a sustainable solution to power the dwelling. With an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) specified for heating and hot water, the project required an energy-efficient system to meet the clients’ expectations.

Challenges

The project met with several challenges, including the South and West orientation of the roofs. The solar panels had to be carefully placed to maximise energy generation. Furthermore, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) imposed restrictions, only allowing bi-phase supply making it difficult to balance the load within the system, this required the integration of two systems working in tandem, as needed. Limitations imposed by the DNO made the project challenging, but far from impossible. Seamless communication among multiple systems was essential if the project was to be success.

The solution

To overcome these challenges, we worked hard to devise a comprehensive solution. This included:

  • Battery storage and solar installations: A 10kW battery system coupled with two G98 solar installations (each with a capacity of 3.68kW) was installed to ensure sufficient energy storage and generation. This also ensured that the expectations of the DNO were met.
  • Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP): An ASHP was integrated into the project to provide efficient heating and hot water, helping to reduce the client’s reliance on traditional energy sources and improve the sustainability of the property.
  • System integration: All the components, including the ASHP, solar panels, inverters and battery storage, were hardwired to facilitate effective communication and monitoring.

The Results/Stat

The implementation of these solutions yielded impressive outcomes:

  • Minimal heat loss: The barn conversion achieved a heat loss of only 8kW, proving the effectiveness of the insulation and heating system solutions included in the project.
  • Future expansion: The success of the initial installation led to the specification of a second battery to enhance the system’s capacity and self-sufficiency even further.
  • Cost and carbon savings: The client realised significant cost savings on their energy bills as well a substantial reduction in their carbon footprint, helping them to meet their sustainability goals.

Conclusion

Our approach to the barn conversion project not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. By addressing the unique challenges and making the most of these advanced technologies, we were able to deliver a highly efficient, sustainable and self-sufficient energy system. The success of the project emphasises the efficiency of today’s renewable energy solutions as well as our commitment to helping our valued clients to achieve their environmental objectives.
